Eastern Regional Minister orders temporary closure of two SHSs after violent student clashes

Mrs Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Eastern Regional Minister, has ordered the temporary closure of Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School after violent student clashes left six injured and damaged school properties.

The violence occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at Akropong in the Akuapem North Municipality, where some school facilities were set on fire during the disturbances.

Mrs Awatey announced the closure when she visited the schools with members of the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to inspect the damage and gather first-hand information.

She said the violence was worrying, especially at a time when the Government was investing in better school buildings and teaching and learning materials.

The Minister condemned the riot and called for a full investigation to identify those behind the disturbances.

She also urged students to obey school rules, focus on their education and stay away from violence and vandalism.

The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu Bempah, advised students to live responsibly and protect their future.

He warned that any student found involved in unlawful acts would face the law.

Rev. Richard Koranteng Afari, the Headmaster of Okuapeman SHS, said six students were injured during the clash.

“Four had been treated and discharged, while two remain on admission,” he said.
