Former Gender Minister petitions IGP Yohuno to probe father for sexually abusing four girls at Gomoa Dominase

Dr Freda Prempeh, a former Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has called on human rights activists and the media to follow up on an alleged case of sexual abuse and exploitation involving four girls and their biological father.

The former Minister and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo Region also appealed to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to commission an independent police investigation team to probe the case.

Dr. Prempeh's call followed a viral video of the mother of the victims, aged between eight and 14 years, appealing for justice for her children.

In the video, which has attracted widespread public attention on social media, the mother accused her husband of sexually abusing the girls at Gomoa Dominase in the Central Region.

Reacting to the allegation, Dr Prempeh, Founder of the Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF), a women- and girls-focused non-governmental organisation, described the alleged incident as barbaric and a serious form of human rights abuse.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Dr Prempeh explained that the UWF empowered indigenous and vulnerable women and girls to recognise their self-worth and position themselves for growth.

Dr Prempeh noted that sexual abuse against girls was not only inimical to their holistic growth and development but could also subject victims to serious emotional pain and trauma.

“Many of these girls are unable to return to normal life when they are sexually abused by people, especially those they trust,” she said.

Dr Prempeh emphasised that “Ghana isn't a lawless nation and for that matter all vulnerable girls and women must also access the right to justice, regardless of their location and background.”

“If we sit down unconcerned that desperate mother and her children wouldn't have justice, if the incident really happened,” she stressed, calling on civil society organisations, human rights lawyers and other actors to support the mother to seek justice for her children.

Dr Prempeh added: “You can see from the video that her cry is a desperate cry from an anxious and a less privileged mother and the IGP must also intervene.”
