'Bring back Ken Ofori-Atta to face justice, suspend your internal elections for 8 years' — George Justice Arthur to NPP

Cape Coast Mayor, Hon. George Justice Arthur, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to suspend its internal elections for the next eight years and instead focus on rebuilding and restructuring the party to improve its chances of returning to power.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV, the Mayor argued that the NPP had lost much of its appeal among Ghanaians, including some of its own supporters, and therefore required significant internal reforms rather than immediately embarking on another cycle of elections.

“NPP should put any elections on hold for the next eight years. They should rebuild the party and bring back Ken Ofori-Atta before they can regain power,” he said.

Hon. George Justice Arthur said the party was no longer as attractive to the electorate as it had been in the past, describing the situation as one that should concern both the leadership and grassroots of the NPP.

He maintained that NPP members themselves could attest to the party’s declining popularity, stressing the need for the party to reassess its structures, rebuild its internal organisation and reconnect with voters.

The comments come as the NPP prepares for its next presidential contest and considers strategies to reposition the party following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

The Mayor’s proposal for an eight-year pause in internal elections is likely to fuel discussion within the party, particularly over whether organisational renewal should take precedence over the selection of a new presidential candidate.
