Savannah Peace Council, GNFS explore collaboration to promote community safety

The Savannah Regional Peace Council has initiated collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the region to promote peaceful coexistence, community safety, and effective disaster management.

The Council, led by its Chairman, Rev. Fr. Lazarus Anyereh, made the commitment when he visited the GNFS Regional Command in Damongo on Friday.

The visit was to introduce the Council to the Command, gain insight into the work of the GNFS, and explore areas of collaboration to support peaceful cohabitation and community development in the region.

Rev. Fr. Anyereh said the Peace Council’s mandate was to prevent conflicts and promote sustainable peace in communities through dialogue, collaboration, and peaceful approaches to resolving disputes.

He expressed the Council’s strong interest in working closely with the GNFS, saying collaboration between institutions was essential to achieving shared goals and promoting safe and peaceful communities.

He said the courtesy visit formed part of efforts by the Council to strengthen relationships with key institutions in the region and identify practical areas where joint initiatives could contribute to community wellbeing.

The Acting Regional Commander of the GNFS, Divisional Officer I (DOI) Alhassan Abubakari, welcomed the delegation and assured the Council of the Service’s readiness to support peacebuilding efforts through fire prevention and education, rescue operations, and disaster management.

He said the GNFS played an important role in protecting lives and property and was prepared to work with relevant institutions to enhance safety and resilience within communities.

DOI Abubakari, however, drew attention to the vast geographical area of the Savannah Region, which he said presented challenges to the Service’s ability to respond promptly to emergencies.

He therefore appealed for support towards the provision of an additional fire station or fire engine to improve emergency response and extend fire and rescue services to communities across the region.

The two institutions expressed their commitment to maintaining dialogue and exploring opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest to enhance peace, safety and resilience in the Savannah Region.
