APP calls for boycott of NPP’s ‘Ghana Under Attack’ demo, says democracy remains intact

The Action People’s Party (APP) has called on Ghanaians to boycott the planned “Ghana Under Attack” demonstration being organised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the protest as unnecessary, unjustified and inconsistent with the realities of the country.

The APP Founder and Leader, Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah, said the planned demonstration, which is being held in connection with the detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, does not reflect any genuine threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s national headquarters at Mile 7 in Accra, Mr. Asamoah argued that Ghana’s democratic institutions remain strong and functional, insisting that the country continues to enjoy peace, stability and constitutional governance.

According to him, the theme of the protest, “Ghana Under Attack,” is misleading and creates a false impression about the state of the nation.

“Today’s Ghana is not under attack. Our democracy is functioning, there is peace across the country and state institutions are operating.

The suggestion that Ghana is under attack is misleading and does not represent the reality on the ground,” he stated.

The APP leader urged the NPP to allow the judicial process involving Chairman Wontumi to run its full course rather than resorting to street protests.

He described the demonstration as a waste of resources and cautioned that such actions could undermine efforts to project Ghana as a stable destination for investment.

Mr. Asamoah explained that portraying the country as being in crisis could negatively affect investor confidence at a time when Ghana is working to strengthen its economy and attract more foreign investment.

He further argued that the challenges facing the NPP are largely internal, attributing them to what he described as inconsistencies and indiscipline within the party.

“The issues confronting the NPP are not because Ghana’s democracy is under attack, but rather matters within their own party that require internal solutions,” he said.

The APP leader also rejected claims that Ghana’s democratic credentials are under threat, pointing instead to past incidents under the previous NPP administration which, in his view, posed a greater danger to democratic governance.

He cited the reported attack on a female judge in Kumasi by members of a vigilante group during a court case involving members of the group as an example of conduct that threatened the independence of state institutions.

Mr. Asamoah maintained that the current legal proceedings involving Chairman Wontumi should not be used as a basis to question Ghana’s democratic stability.

He reiterated the APP’s confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions and appealed to political parties and citizens to uphold the rule of law, exercise restraint and avoid actions that could create unnecessary tension.

The APP Founder and Leader therefore urged Ghanaians to disregard the planned demonstration, insisting that national development and economic progress require peace, stability and respect for due process.
