Kumasi: Police arrest two suspects after seizing 100 parcels of suspected narcotics hidden in fertilizer sacks

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two men after intercepting substances suspected to be narcotic drugs concealed in fertilizer sacks during an intelligence-led operation at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.

The operation was carried out on Tuesday, July 21, after police received credible intelligence that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported in fertilizer sacks.

A team from the Manhyia District Police Command, supported by personnel from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Zongo Police Station, moved to the location and arrested the suspects.

The suspects, identified as Osman Bassein, 37, and Mohammed Abdul-Razak, 38, were found with 13 fertilizer sacks which, upon inspection, contained second-hand clothing concealing 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

"The operation was conducted on 21st July 2026 following credible intelligence that suspected narcotic drugs were being transported concealed in fertilizer sacks," the statement read in part.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the search was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses.

The law enforcement agency said the suspected narcotics were photographed at the scene in line with evidential procedures before being secured for forensic examination.

Police said the two suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.

They are expected to be processed in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigations.

"The Regional Command commends members of the public for providing timely and credible information that supports the fight against crime," the police said.
