The Upper West Regional Police Command has intercepted a large quantity of illegal ammunition and arrested three suspects in connection with its transportation following an intelligence-led operation in the Upper West Region.
According to a press release issued by the Ghana Police Service on 1st July 2026, the operation took place on Monday, June 29, 2026, when police intercepted a commercial vehicle transporting ammunition through an unapproved route outside Wa.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 200 boxes of AA cartridges, amounting to approximately 50,000 rounds of ammunition, which had been concealed beneath other goods in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
The police identified the three suspects as Alhassan Issahaku, Iddrisu Mashood, and Alhaji Issahaku, all of whom were arrested to assist with ongoing investigations into the case.
The suspects are currently in police custody while investigators work to establish the source of the ammunition, its intended destination, and whether other individuals or criminal networks were involved in the operation.
The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the professionalism, vigilance, and integrity of the officers who carried out the successful interception, describing the operation as a significant step in preventing the illegal movement of ammunition within the region.
The Command also reassured residents of the Upper West Region of its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing crime, and maintaining peace and security across the region.
The Police further appealed to the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help detect criminal activities, dismantle illegal networks, and safeguard communities.
