Kufuor Commissions Roads

THE PRESIDENT, John Agyekum Kufuor has cut the sod for the commencement of reconstruction works on two major trunk roads in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The projects are the 56-kilometre and 48.3-kilometre Berekum-Sampa and Sunyani-Ntotroso-Acherensua roads respectively.

Cutting the sods at separate locations, the President said, “The nation deserves first class infrastructure like good roads, clinics, hospitals and other social amenities to enhance economic well being.”

According to the President, government has been working tirelessly to secure the needed resources to provide development projects for all regions in the country.

Touching on the socio-economic benefits of the roads when they are completed, President Kufuor said, “The people will be able to travel to market centres and health posts in a more convenient and safer way”, and that commuting between Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire would be improved to increase productivity and socio-economic growth in the sub region.

He stressed that government was committed to the development of the nation's infrastructure to enable it achieve a middle-income status by 2015.

With the Yuletide inching closer, he called on the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the National Road Safety Commission and the various transport associations, to intensify education and enforce corrective measures on road users.

“We need to make our roads life tracks, not death traps,” the President pointed out.

He asked the Ghana Highway Authority, the supervisors of the road projects, to do diligent work for the benefit of the state.

When this is done, the President stated that Ghana will gradually become a structurally beautiful country with completed modern road infrastructure to enhance socio-economic development.

President Kufuor expressed concern about the “security of road safety signs and crash barriers” and called on the citizenry to uphold a maintenance culture on the roads.

He expressed the government's appreciation to M.S.J. Adom Limited, a construction company, for offering to modify the Antwikrom Road to prevent accidents.

He conveyed the gratitude of government to development partners, contractors and consultants for their support and contributions to the growth of the road sector.
