Asantehene Warns PSGH: “Expand, But Never Compromise Standards”

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) against sacrificing professional standards in the quest to expand the profession, insisting that quality must remain the defining hallmark of pharmacy education and practice.

Speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the Society’s 90th Anniversary celebration held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday, June 28, Otumfuo stressed that the future of pharmacy in Ghana would be shaped not by numbers, but by the calibre of professionals trained.

Addressing pharmacists from across the country, he urged them to continually demonstrate their relevance within Ghana’s healthcare system by prioritising patient‑centred care.

The gathering brought together members of the PSGH to reflect on the evolution of pharmacy education in Ghana and to chart recommendations for the profession’s future.

Otumfuo further called on government to prioritise the development and deployment of pharmacists as part of efforts to strengthen the national healthcare system.

“I will state this plainly: no health system can function effectively without a strong, well‑trained and properly utilised pharmaceutical workforce. Investments in healthcare must include deliberate attention to the development and deployment of pharmacists across all levels of care. I expect that we will move forward and clarify discipline and purpose,” he said.
