“No One Is Above the Law”: NPA Boss Says Ken Ofori‑Atta Cannot Escape Accountability Abroad

Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, says former Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta cannot avoid accountability by remaining outside Ghana while questions persist over his stewardship in office.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Friday, June 27, 2026, Mr. Tameklo argued that holding public office does not grant immunity from legal or investigative scrutiny—whether an individual has left office or relocated abroad.

He stressed that accountability must apply equally to all public officials, regardless of their current location, insisting that the rule of law cannot be undermined simply because someone is outside the country’s jurisdiction.

Mr. Tameklo referenced international precedents where former government officials have faced investigations and legal processes despite living abroad, noting that physical absence does not nullify accountability mechanisms.

He warned that allowing individuals under investigation to remain outside the jurisdiction without facing due process would erode public trust in Ghana’s governance and justice systems.

“You just came, abused this country’s resources and decide that let’s run away because we are above the law,” he said.

His comments come amid heightened public debate over efforts to hold former public office holders accountable for their management of state resources.

The NPA boss maintained that accountability is a cornerstone of good governance and must be enforced without fear or favour, regardless of the office previously held.

Mr. Tameklo emphasized that no public official should consider themselves beyond the reach of the law, underscoring that accountability remains an essential pillar of Ghana’s democratic system.
