Ghana stands firmly behind you — Presidency cheers on Black Stars ahead of World Cup opener

The Presidency has thrown its full support behind the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama.

The team is set to begin its fifth World Cup appearance in Toronto on Wednesday, June 17.

The government says the squad carries the hopes of millions of Ghanaians both at home and abroad.

The Black Stars enter the tournament in a difficult Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, as they seek a strong start to their campaign.

Ghana is hoping to surpass its historic quarter-final run achieved at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

In an official message issued by President John Dramani Mahama and signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government described the team as symbols of national pride.

“Our gallant Black Stars, as you stand on the threshold of your first match against Panama in Toronto, the Government and the over thirty million people of Ghana stand firmly behind you,” the statement said.

It added that the players represent more than just a football team, but the collective identity and aspirations of the nation.

“You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams, and heritage of a people,” it stated.

The Presidency further called on Ghanaians in the diaspora, especially those in Toronto and across North America, to rally behind the team as the “12th Man” in the stands.

At home, the government said arrangements had been made to ensure nationwide access to the tournament through secured broadcast rights, allowing citizens across the country to follow the action live.

The statement urged the players to compete with pride and determination, encouraging them to play for the national flag and for young Ghanaians inspired by their journey.
