The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an urgent thunderstorm alert covering large parts of the country, warning residents in coastal and northern areas to prepare for heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
The alert, issued at 8:23 am on Wednesday, indicates that rain and thunderclouds have already formed over the southeastern and northeastern borders of Ghana.
According to GMet, these weather systems are expected to intensify and spread, bringing varying levels of rainfall and cloudiness to the Volta, Greater Accra, and Eastern Regions during the morning hours. The conditions are also expected to extend into the Upper East and North East Regions later in the day.
The agency further warned that the weather system could reach parts of the Upper West, Savannah, and Northern Regions from late morning into the afternoon, affecting much of the northern sector of the country.
GMet has classified the expected severity of the weather as moderate, with the alert remaining valid until 2:00 pm on Wednesday.
Residents in affected areas have been advised to take precautionary measures as the rains approach. The agency urged the public to avoid outdoor activities during heavy downpours, stay away from flooded roads and waterways, and remain alert to possible hazards.
Motorists have also been cautioned to drive carefully, particularly in low lying areas that are prone to flooding. GMet encouraged the public to monitor official weather updates as the situation develops.
