Flooding crisis: 'Current NDC gov't the laziest and weakest since 1992' — Miracles Aboagye

Spokesperson for the 2028 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has taken a swipe at the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration over recent flooding incidents in the country.

Several parts of the country experience flooding during the rainy season, leaving people dead, displacing families and destroying properties.

The situation recurs almost every year, particularly in urban centres, whenever heavy rains occur.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily programme on Wednesday, June 10, the NPP communicator argued that the current administration had failed to put in place adequate measures to mitigate the impact of flooding.

He further claimed that two of the most devastating flooding incidents in Ghana's history occurred under NDC governments.

"This government is the laziest and weakest leadership this country has seen since 1992," he said.

Miracles Aboagye acknowledged that flooding has been a longstanding challenge in Accra but noted that previous governments implemented preventive measures before the onset of the rains.

According to him, activities such as storm drain dredging, desilting exercises and public education campaigns were usually undertaken ahead of the rainy season to minimise the effects of flooding.

"This government, because they are lazy, whenever they are in office, they sit down, they do nothing, pictures, optics, blogging, and then they don't do the real work. By the time they realise, the rains have set in, the entire city is engulfed and everybody is running around," he stated.

The NPP communicator also questioned the effectiveness of the government's anti-flood task force, arguing that little had been heard about its activities after its initial assessment tours.

He stressed that the recent floods, which reportedly claimed lives and damaged properties in parts of Accra, exposed what he described as a lack of urgency and effective leadership in addressing one of the country's recurring challenges.
