I have done a lot to deserve Best Regional Minister award — Linda Ocloo

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has asserted that she deserves to be named Best Regional Minister.

The minister was honoured at the Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Honours held on Saturday, June 6.

The recognition has, however, attracted backlash from sections of the public, with some describing the timing as insensitive.

Others have also alleged that the award was paid for.

However, speaking on Accra-based Asaase Radio on Monday, the minister said she deserved the honour because of the work she has done for the region.

"So I wasn't surprised by the award I received because sometimes I keep telling people that when others recognise the little effort you put in and give you that recognition, it empowers you to do more.

"And so for me, I know I've done a lot for the good people of Greater Accra. I've done a lot that deserves that recognition, and so to God be the glory," she said.

The minister also took a swipe at critics who have suggested that she paid money to receive the award.

Professor Michael Kpessa-Whyte, Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), alleged in an opinion editorial that the awards scheme required prospective recipients to make payments before receiving honours.

According to Prof. Kpessa-Whyte, he was approached by the organisers and informed that attendance to receive the award was linked to either a sponsorship package worth GH¢50,000 or the purchase of a table for eight at GH¢25,000.

Reacting to the allegations, Linda Ocloo said she had little interest in engaging the SIGA boss on the matter, suggesting his comments may have been influenced by personal grievances.

"I will not even allow you to talk about Prof. Kpessa-Whyte. I have defeated Prof. Kpessa-Whyte four consecutive times, and so if Prof. Kpessa-Whyte felt that because I was recognised, he wants to tarnish it, then that is his own issue," she said.
