Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has blamed Ghana's persistent flooding problem on the actions and inactions of citizens rather than natural causes.
Several parts of the country experience flooding during the rainy season, leaving many people dead, displacing families and destroying properties.
The situation recurs almost every year, particularly in urban centres, whenever heavy rains occur.
In a social media post on Sunday, June 7, reacting to the recent flood incidents, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant said the disasters are largely the result of human irresponsibility.
"Ghana has been flooding since before independence. 3,000 dead. 700,000 displaced. $1 billion lost. Not from hurricanes. Not from tsunamis," he wrote.
According to him, decades of poor environmental practices and disregard for planning regulations have worsened the country's vulnerability to flooding.
He argued that many of the flood-related tragedies could have been avoided if citizens and authorities had taken responsibility for protecting drainage systems and waterways.
"From gutters we blocked ourselves. From waterways we built on. From warnings we ignored.
The rain didn't fail us. We failed ourselves," the former lawmaker wrote.
His comments come amid renewed public debate over the causes of flooding following recent heavy rains that inundated parts of the country, disrupted transportation and damaged homes and businesses.
