Ayariga Assures Minority of Full Transparency on Upcoming Mining Agreements

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has assured the Minority in Parliament that the upcoming mining agreements — including the Damang agreement — will be handled with full transparency when they are laid before the House in the coming days.

He said government remains committed to ensuring that all Members of Parliament have equal access to the documents and adequate time to scrutinise the terms before any approval is considered.

It will be recalled that during the first sitting of the 9th Parliament, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources withdrew the revised mining agreement, including a recent lithium deal. Deputy Minister Yusif Sulemana explained that the withdrawal was to allow for broader stakeholder engagement before the agreement is reintroduced for ratification.

The move followed heightened scrutiny from Minority MPs and policy analysts who raised concerns about the structure of the agreement and Ghana’s negotiating position in major mining deals.

Speaking at the Leadership Media Brief on Friday, May 22, 2026, Ayariga appealed to Minority legislators to engage the process constructively, stressing that nothing would be concealed during deliberations.

“So I just want to urge the Minority that there will be full transparency displayed in the House when we are considering these agreements. Copies will be made available to everybody, and we’ll compare the agreement with all previous agreements and see if there’s any difference in terms of the Damang agreement and all agreements that have been approved in the last eight years,” he said.

He maintained that Parliament will benchmark the new agreements against those approved in previous years, as scrutiny of mining deals continues to attract significant political and public attention.
