Mr Dominic Aduna Bingab Nitiwul, Chairperson of Parliament's Assurances Committee, has underscored the need for ministers of state and government appointees to respect parliamentary committees by honouring invitations extended to them to account for their stewardship.
His remarks followed the failure of some ministers to appear before the Committee during a public hearing held at Parliament House in Accra on Wednesday.
Mr Nitiwul, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, said the Committee was not a witch-hunting body but one mandated to ensure accountability and efficient service delivery to the people of Ghana.
He cautioned ministers who are unable to attend committee sittings to delegate their deputies, stressing that persistent disregard for parliamentary summons would be reported to the House.
“No minister is above the law,” he declared, warning that the Committee would not take repeated absenteeism by ministers and government officials lightly.
The Chairperson announced that the meeting had been rescheduled to Thursday, July 9, 2026, and that officials from the Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Health, and Foreign Affairs were expected to appear before the Committee.
The Assurances Committee of Parliament is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the implementation of promises, undertakings and assurances made by ministers on the floor of the House.
The Committee plays a key role in strengthening parliamentary oversight, promoting transparency and enhancing accountability in governance.
Mr Nitiwul, a former Minister of Defence and a long-serving Member of Parliament, said effective oversight remained essential to deepening democratic governance and ensuring public confidence in state institutions.
His comments reflect growing concerns within Parliament over the responsiveness of some ministers and public officials to parliamentary oversight mechanisms.
