Governor Asiamah should have resigned over BoG's 2025 losses — Alfred Thompson

A former Deputy Managing Director of the National Investment Bank, Alfred Thompson, has criticised the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah, over the central bank’s financial losses in 2025.

The Bank of Ghana’s 2025 financial statement recorded a net loss of GH¢15.6 billion, up from GH¢9.4 billion in 2024.

Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show on Wednesday, May 6, Mr. Thompson, who is a member of the NPP national communications team, argued that the Governor ought to have stepped down over the development.

He said the current situation contradicts earlier assurances given by Dr. Asiamah when he assumed office.

“We are expecting that when the NDC took over and the governor gave us that huge promise… we’ll see at least profitability coming in. But rather, there is a jump to over GH¢15 billion in losses,” he stated.

Mr. Thompson noted that the Bank had been on a declining loss trajectory in previous years, making the latest figures concerning.

He also questioned the scale of expenditure used to manage inflation, suggesting inefficiencies in policy implementation.

“It tells you that there is something fundamental that is wrong and someone should be held accountable,” he added.

According to him, the Governor had previously criticised the 2024 losses and assured Ghanaians that such outcomes would not recur.

He stressed that, based on those assurances and the current financial performance of the central bank, resignation would have been the appropriate step.
