Ghanaian broadcast journalist Paul Adom Otchere has dismissed claims that the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration has been able to stabilise the Ghanaian economy despite the Russia-Ukraine war.
Some commentators have praised the government for improved macroeconomic indicators, including lower inflation and a stable currency, arguing that these achievements came despite the ongoing conflict.
However, speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Monday, March 9, Adom Otchere said such claims are politically motivated and fail to account for global developments that have reduced the war’s economic impact.
“The effect of the Russia-Ukraine war at the time it started, and its effects now all over the world, has completely diminished. Why has it diminished? Because the world was unaware of the extensive supply chain connection between Europe and the rest of the world that was controlled by Ukraine…
“Once it started, it is a supply chain disruption. The world, sophisticated as we have become, will always find an alternative to a supply chain disruption,” he explained.
Adom Otchere argued that initial disruptions caused by the war, such as shortages of grain from Ukraine affecting Egypt, have since been resolved through alternative supply chain arrangements.
“To say that the Russia-Ukraine war is still raging and continues to impact economies as it did at the start is the worst of arguments. The supply chain has been replaced; the war can go on forever and it will never have the effect of the time it started,” he said.
