The High Court of Ghana has ordered a pregnancy test for 25-year-old Vera Asare before proceeding with sentencing in a case involving an acid attack that led to the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Omane.
The directive, issued during proceedings in the Eastern Region, temporarily suspends sentencing until her medical status is confirmed.
Asare was convicted for attacking Omane, a mobile phone dealer popularly known as Anelka, with acid on November 29, 2024, in Koforidua. According to prosecutors, the assault followed allegations of infidelity.
Omane was subsequently admitted to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he underwent treatment for severe injuries for several months. He later died on July 25, 2025, and has since been buried. The couple had a three-year-old child.
Proceedings on Monday were marked by emotional scenes in court, as relatives of the deceased expressed anger over the postponement of sentencing pending the outcome of the pregnancy test.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to its tragic outcome and the procedural step taken by the court ahead of sentencing. Many are closely monitoring developments as the matter returns to court for final judgment.
