His Excellency Huseyin Gungor, the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, has assured the Bono Regional Minister, Hon Joseph Addae Akwaboa, that the Turkish government was ready to support the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) Medical School with needed medical equipment to provide excellent healthcare services to save lives, building on existing collaborations between Turkey and Ghana in healthcare.
H.E. Huseyin Gungor made this known when a delegation from Bono Region led by the Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa paid a courtesy call on him at his residence in Accra on Monday, 10th December 2025 to discuss bilateral cooperation and investment opportunities in Bono Region.
Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister, who requested the support, thanked the Ambassador and indicated that the Medical School was dear to him and the people of Bono Region to support quality healthcare delivery.
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is establishing a medical school, linked with the elevated Sunyani Regional Hospital, becoming a Teaching Hospital, with plans set for first student admissions in January 2026.
The Medical School, which is set to provide research and academic excellence, aims to boost healthcare in the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions. The initiative, spurred by government support and Parliamentary interest, also seeks to address the region's healthcare needs by training more doctors locally. It is also part of the government policy to train more healthcare professionals and reduce reliance on foreign medical schools.
Hon. Akwaboa and the Turkish Ambassador further discussed potential collaboration in key sectors, including agribusiness, industry, real estate development, the provision of various scholarships, training, and capacity building, as well as water supply initiatives. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued partnership and support for initiatives that will improve livelihoods and stimulate sustainable economic growth in the Bono Region.
