Kofi Amoabeng Highlights Mahama’s Humility as a Unique Strength for Ghana’s Progress

Prince Kofi Amoabeng, founder of the defunct UT Bank, has praised President John Dramani Mahama as an exceptionally humble and down-to-earth leader, saying Ghana is fortunate to have such a quality in a public figure.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV's The Point of View, Mr. Amoabeng revealed that his friendship with Mr. Mahama dates back to the period when Mahama served as Vice President.

He explained that the relationship initially began through the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, with whom he shared close and informal interactions.

He noted that their friendship became less frequent after UT transitioned into a bank between 2009 and 2010—a period he described as particularly demanding for him.

Despite the reduced interactions, Mr. Amoabeng said President Mahama's character has remained unchanged over the years. He praised him as humane, approachable, and extremely humble, adding that Mr. Mahama freely relates with people from all walks of life.

The retired military captain recounted: “He’s been my friend, his wife, the First Lady Lordina Mahama, was my friend, and he also became my friend. We shared intimate moments, we had drinks, and ate together. This is when he was a vice president. That time, I was building UT, and we were not a bank yet.

“We became a bank between 2009 and 2010, and that got me busy, so the friendship got a bit distant. The President is too down-to-earth, humane, and extremely humble; sometimes he loses himself and doesn’t know the power he has. He interacts with everyone, and that is a rare quality we’re lucky to have.”
