Daniel Asiedu, popularly known as Sexy Don Don, has taken his long-running legal battle a step further by filing a notice of appeal to challenge the controversial 4-3 jury verdict that declared him not guilty of murder in the killing of Abuakwa North MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu.
His lawyer argues that the outcome amounted to a mistrial rather than an acquittal, insisting that the judge’s decision to order a fresh trial must be overturned.
Court officials are now compiling the certified record of proceedings, after which the appeal court will set a date for the hearing.
The case remains one of the most protracted and closely followed murder trials in recent Ghanaian history. The late J.B. Danquah Adu, a prominent New Patriotic Party lawmaker, was stabbed to death in his home during the early hours of the morning. Asiedu was arrested within days and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit robbery alongside an alleged accomplice, Vincent Bosso.
Public attention intensified as the case took numerous twists. Asiedu initially confessed, claiming he stabbed the MP during a confrontation and even asked the family for forgiveness. He later recanted, alleging torture and coercion by investigators. At other points, he claimed political figures had contracted him to commit the act, though he never named anyone in open court.
The trial featured long delays, rampant adjournments and sharp disputes over the credibility of forensic evidence, the postmortem report and the overall quality of the police investigation. Bosso was discharged in March 2024 after the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence against him.
In December 2024, the seven-member jury returned a split decision. Four jurors voted to acquit, while three voted to convict. With no unanimous verdict, the judge declared the trial inconclusive and ordered a retrial. Asiedu has since insisted he is mentally and emotionally drained by the years-long process. He is now fighting the retrial order and preparing an application for bail while the appeal progresses.
The timeline of the next phase will depend on how quickly the court finalises the trial records and schedules arguments before the appeals panel.
