Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, has officially transformed his political movement, the Movement for Change, into a fully registered political party now known as the United Party (UP).
The rebranding marks a defining moment in Mr. Kyerematen’s political career as he positions himself and his new party as a credible third force in Ghana’s political landscape ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to the party’s leadership, the United Party name and identity embody a vision of national unity, inclusiveness, and development-driven leadership that seeks to move Ghana beyond partisan divisions.
Mr. Kyerematen, who broke away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2023 after decades of service, founded the Movement for Change with the promise of “restoring hope, integrity, and accountability in governance.” With the EC’s certification of the new party on October 3, that vision has now evolved into a full-fledged political institution committed to nation-building for all Ghanaians.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Accra, the party’s interim chairman, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, announced that the United Party has already begun establishing regional and constituency structures across the country. These organizational steps, he said, are part of preparations for a grand national launch in the coming months.
Mr. Asamoa emphasized that the UP will champion policies focused on economic empowerment, industrial expansion, and social inclusion — principles consistent with Mr. Kyerematen’s long-standing advocacy for private-sector-led growth.
Political analysts view this transformation as a calculated move to solidify Kyerematen’s independent political ambitions and provide a new alternative to the dominance of the NPP and NDC.
The United Party is expected to make its first major policy statement soon, with Mr. Kyerematen scheduled to deliver a national address outlining the party’s vision, governance philosophy, and strategic roadmap toward the 2028 elections.
With its launch, the United Party officially enters Ghana’s political arena as a contender promising unity, innovation, and a renewed sense of purpose for the nation’s future.
