Youth keep acquiring degrees with no end in sight due to lack of jobs — Sammi Awuku

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Awuku, has expressed concern about rising unemployment among Ghanaian youth

He observed that many graduates are unable to find jobs despite pursuing higher education.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, June 11, the lawmaker criticised the government over what he described as its failure to fulfil key job creation promises, including the much-publicised 24-hour economy policy.

According to him, many young people are resorting to enrolling in additional academic programmes because employment opportunities remain limited.

"There's a growing trend where the young people, after acquiring a degree, because there are no jobs, they are now looking forward to applying for another course to obtain another degree," he said.

Sammi Awuku argued that the unemployment situation should not be treated as a partisan issue, insisting that it has become a matter of national concern requiring urgent attention.

He further questioned the progress of government initiatives aimed at creating jobs, including the One Million Coders programme and other youth employment interventions.

The Akuapem North MP also raised concerns about inadequate funding for the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, saying this could undermine efforts to address the problem.

"We should not reduce this unemployment situation... it is a national security matter, because if the young people in our constituencies cannot see any end in sight, the politicians become a target for their frustration," he noted.
