Heavy rainfall that swept through Sandema in the Upper East Region on Thursday morning left several parts of the town submerged, disrupting movement and cutting off the main road linking Sandema to Navrongo.
Residents woke up to flooded streets and overflowing drains after hours of intense rainfall, with some low-lying communities experiencing significant water accumulation. The flooding rendered sections of the Sandema–Navrongo road impassable, forcing motorists and commuters to seek alternative routes while others were left stranded.
Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy downpour began in the early hours of Thursday and intensified throughout the morning, causing water levels to rise rapidly across parts of the district. Businesses and residents in affected areas were forced to suspend their activities as floodwaters inundated roads and compounds.
The incident comes at a time when the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned of heavy rains and thunderstorms across parts of northern Ghana, including the Upper East Region, urging residents to avoid flooded roads and waterways and remain alert to weather updates.
Although no casualties had been reported as of Thursday afternoon, residents expressed concern over the recurring flooding situation and called for improved drainage infrastructure to mitigate future incidents.
Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage and provide updates on the condition of affected roads and communities. Meanwhile, road users have been advised to exercise caution and avoid attempting to cross flooded sections of the roadway.
The latest flooding adds to growing concerns about the impact of seasonal rains on transportation and livelihoods across parts of northern Ghana as the rainy season intensifies.
