Social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the successful completion of Ghana's ongoing constitutional review process.
His comments come after the Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, submitted its report to President Mahama at the Jubilee House in December 2025.
The committee proposed several reforms, including extending the presidential term from four to five years, fully separating Parliament from the Executive, and reducing the length of election campaign periods.
In a social media post on Friday, June 12, Barker-Vormawor argued that the constitutional review could become the defining achievement of President Mahama's administration.
"Constitution Review will be the President's biggest legacy," he stated.
The legal practitioner said Ghana's democratic journey under the Fourth Republic has exposed weaknesses in the 1992 Constitution, which he believes have contributed to growing elitism and weakened accountability in governance.
According to him, the ideals of probity, accountability and transparency that inspired the country's democratic development have not been fully realised.
He further contended that the current political system has enabled the emergence of a political class that often prioritises its own interests over those of ordinary citizens.
"Our democracy is less secure, less socially progressive and has produced, in Afenyo-Markin's words a single-interest 'political class' across the political divide which regularly cedes to appeals to stick together to protect themselves at the expense of we the people," he wrote.
Barker-Vormawor, however, expressed optimism that the review process presents an opportunity to reshape Ghana's governance architecture and deepen social justice.
He urged politicians and citizens alike to support reforms that would strengthen democratic institutions and make governance more responsive to the needs of the people.
"We can change that! We can craft a 'social democracy' of our own making," he noted.
