'Shameful' New Juaben South MP must fulfill promise to resign after Akwatia win — Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called on the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, to honour his public pledge to resign from Parliament following the NDC’s victory in the Akwatia by-election.

According to Mr. Asiedu Nketia, the New Juaben South MP had previously vowed to relinquish his seat if the opposition NDC won the Akwatia contest. With the NDC emerging victorious, the party chairman says it is now time for the MP to demonstrate integrity and uphold his word.

“Mr. Michael Okyere Baafi boldly declared that he would resign if the NDC won the Akwatia by-election. The NDC has won, so what is he waiting for? He should resign so that a by-election can be held in New Juaben South,” Asiedu Nketia said.

He made the remarks during his “Thank You Tour” of the Eastern Region, where he addressed party members, traditional authorities, and residents in Koforidua.

Asiedu Nketia praised President John Dramani Mahama for his steadfast leadership and commitment to fulfilling the NDC’s campaign promises, urging party members to remain united and focused.

“We must not allow personal interests or internal disagreements to divide us,” he cautioned. “We will bring shame upon ourselves if we fail to deliver on our promises. Thankfully, we have a good president who has already begun delivering.”

He emphasised that the NDC had made significant progress under President Mahama and that internal unity remained crucial to achieving the party’s goals.

“What remains is for us to stay united and support President Mahama to complete the task ahead,” he added.

The NDC Chairman also warned against internal conflicts, saying factionalism could derail the party’s progress and damage its public image.

“If we begin fighting among ourselves because we didn’t get what we wanted, we all stand to lose,” he noted.

Mr Asiedu Nketia reassured the chiefs, elders, and residents of New Juaben South that the Mahama-led government remains committed to delivering on its major pledges, including the 24-Hour Economy and other transformative development initiatives.
