A former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over what he describes as the government’s failure to deliver on promises to address Ghana’s persistent flooding challenges.
His comments come amid recurring floods in several parts of the country during the rainy season, a situation that continues to cause displacement of families, and destruction of property, and sometimes deaths.
The flooding problem, which has become a yearly occurrence in major urban centres, has reignited public debate over preparedness, drainage infrastructure and government response measures.
Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, June 10, the former lawmaker said the President had not lived up to commitments made to Ghanaians in his 2024 campaign promises.
He argued that the government had prior knowledge of the flooding challenges but had failed to implement long-term engineering solutions as promised in its manifesto.
According to him, repeated task force announcements and short-term interventions have not translated into lasting improvements on the ground.
Egyapa Mercer further questioned the absence of visible drainage projects and flood mitigation infrastructure despite repeated assurances by the administration.
“Have you seen any strong drains being constructed across this country as the President and his team promised? Where are the engineering solutions? Where is the pathway such that by the time your four-year mandate ends, we will see you actually dealing with this problem?” he asked Mr. Mahama.
He also criticised what he described as misplaced spending priorities, arguing that resources are being channelled into less urgent projects while flooding continued to devastate communities.
