A historic cultural exchange has taken place between the Nandom Traditional Authority, led by Naa Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle Chiir VIII, and communities in Koper, Burkina Faso, with support from GIZ and the Disshin Palace.
The event was organised to deepen unity and cooperation among Dagara-speaking communities across the Ghana–Burkina Faso border.
Documents made available to Modern Ghana News described it as a milestone in strengthening inter-community bonds.
Upon arrival in Koper, the Nandom Naa was given a rousing welcome marked by a cocktail reception and rich cultural performances. A highlight of the visit was his pilgrimage to the tomb of his great-grandfather, Gbullu, who founded Nandom and later passed away in Koper in 1937.
The visit also featured a grand durbar of chiefs and people, where traditional regalia and cultural displays highlighted the shared heritage of the Dagara people. The platform allowed for dialogue on inter-border relations and peaceful coexistence.
As part of the ceremony, the Nandom Naa invited the people of Koper to attend Nandom’s annual traditional festival in November 2025. A symbolic tree-planting exercise was also carried out to represent the growth and resilience of ties between the two communities.
Observers believe the exchange could yield long-term benefits, including regular community interactions, preservation of shared cultural traditions, enhanced cross-border cooperation, and new opportunities for trade and economic collaboration. It also empowers traditional leaders and communities to play a central role in local development.
The initiative was hailed as a resounding success, leaving participants with a renewed sense of unity, identity, and purpose. It underscored the potential of cultural diplomacy in building stronger ties across borders.
