NPP suspends 2024 Agona West PC Chris Arthur for defying party directive

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended its 2024 parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency, Christopher Arthur, for breaching the party’s directives on political engagements.

The suspension, announced in a letter dated July 14, takes immediate effect.

According to a letter signed by the Constituency Secretary, Anthony Kwame Kum, and Chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, Mr. Arthur organized an electoral area meeting on Sunday, July 6, in defiance of a party directive prohibiting premature campaigning.

The directive, issued by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on May 14, cautioned against any form of political activity until nominations were officially opened.

The party said the move was necessary to protect its internal cohesion and strategic focus ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Arthur’s action, they noted, not only violated the directive but also undermined the authority of the party’s leadership and structures.

“Premature engagements not only undermine the authority of the party’s organs but also risk disrupting the careful and strategic efforts currently underway to reposition the party for victory in the 2028 general elections,” the letter stated.

The suspension, which is in line with Articles 3(5)(A) and 3(7) of the NPP Constitution, will remain in force pending a final determination by the Constituency Disciplinary Committee.

During this period, Mr. Arthur has been barred from performing any official duties or representing the party in any capacity.
