Rachel Shares Love With Ghanaian Children

FIFTEEN-YEAR-old Rachel Bervell, a tenth grade Ghanaian student (equal to former form 5) of the Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, Washington America, has on Monday presented toys to children in two children hospitals and an orphanage all in Accra.

The toys were shared among hospitalized children in the Korle-Bu Children's Hospital, Princess Marie Louise (PML) Children's Hospital and the Osu Children's Home, an orphanage in Accra.

At Korle-Bu where the exercise began, as many as 200 children happily received the toys, and their delight in Rachel's kind gesture was very visible as they shyly smiled and hugged their gifts.

The deputy Director of Nursing Services, Department of Child Health, Mr Agnes Assan, who welcomed Rachel and her entourage, was pleased at the teenager's initiative which she believed would greatly facilitate the quick recovery of the indisposed children.

She urged all to emulate the wonderful gesture of Rachel in showing love and concern to Ghanaian children.

Talking to DAILY GUIDE, Rachel explained that the toys, which were donated by her peers at the Kamiak High School on request, were aimed at putting smile on the faces of underprivileged children in Ghana and to also express her love and care for them.

“As a Ghanaian student in the United States, I can't help but have a great deal of pride and love for where I come from, hence I set up the drive which I named 'Hugs for Ghana' to collect the stuffed animal toys from my peers for Ghanaian children.”

According to her, the Kamiak students willingly donated the toys after listening to her call to them to support her noble idea.

Rachel, who disclosed that her family had already adopted a Junior Secondary School at Kenyan village in the Western region, indicated that she had plans to make 'Hugs for Ghana' a non-profit organization to really give meaning to her dream of caring for underprivileged children in Ghana.

She expressed her desire to make the project an annual affair which may include the donation of children's story books, contending that plans were underway to make that dream a reality.

From Korle-Bu, the team went to PML and then to the Osu Children's Home.

Rachel's team included her parents, Mr and Mrs Bervell, and her younger brothers, Joel and Michael.
