Alhaji Asoma Banda, a pioneering Ghanaian businessman and a towering figure in the shipping and aviation industries, has passed away at the age of 92.
Reports of his death surfaced on March 1, 2025, though specific details remain unclear.
Born in June 1933 in Kintampo, Bono East Region, Alhaji Banda rose from humble beginnings to become one of Ghana’s most influential business moguls. He was the first African to own a ship and the first Ghanaian to own an aircraft—milestones that cemented his place in the country’s economic history.
With a sharp business acumen and relentless drive, he founded Antrak Shipping Line, which played a critical role in Ghana’s maritime industry. His influence extended into aviation, where Antrak Air revolutionized domestic air travel, improving connectivity within Ghana and across West Africa.
Beyond business, Alhaji Banda was a visionary leader and mentor, inspiring generations of entrepreneurs to push boundaries despite challenges. His impact stretched beyond commerce, influencing policies and investments that shaped Ghana’s transport sector.
His passing was confirmed by Nigerian businessman and publisher, Dele Mahmoud, who paid tribute to the late industrialist in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Alhaji Banda’s legacy lives on—not only in the industries he shaped but in the countless lives he influenced through his vision, determination, and pioneering spirit.
