Chieftaincy, Tradition and Culture Bunkpurugu: Several persons injured, properties destroyed in conflict
MON, 27 JAN 2025

The once-peaceful community of Ngama Gberuk in the Bunkpurugu district of the North East Region is now engulfed in chaos due to violent clashes that have resulted in numerous injuries and significant property damage.

The conflict reportedly arises from escalating tensions between two local clans, the Nandouk Teeb and Maan Teeb, over chieftaincy titles. The dispute intensified when members of both clans traveled to Binde, the residence of the Pibrana, the Paramount Chief of the region, to participate in enskinment ceremonies. These ceremonies, vital to the community's traditions, involve the formal installation of new chiefs and are typically accompanied by celebrations and heightened emotions.

Following the successful completion of these rituals, the newly enskinned chiefs began their journey back to Ngama Gberuk. However, they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen before they could reach their destination. Eyewitnesses report that the attackers opened fire on the returning clans, resulting in widespread panic and multiple injuries. Many individuals were hurt either by gunfire or during their frantic attempts to escape the violence.

The aftermath has seen significant destruction, with several homes and properties being set alight. Livestock and personal belongings have also been consumed by flames, displacing numerous families who are now seeking shelter in neighboring communities.

The violence has raised concerns about potential retaliatory attacks between the clans, with reports of gunfire already erupting in certain areas, further exacerbating tensions. The situation remains precarious, leaving many residents too afraid to leave their homes.
