Mali, speaking on behalf of the Confederation of Sahel States, which includes Burkina Faso and Niger, has once again urged the international community to address the role of external forces in destabilizing the region.
During a United Nations Security Council meeting, Malian representative Issa Konfourou emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to combat terrorism and tackle its root causes.
On January 24, Issa Konfourou condemned the involvement of certain countries, which exacerbates instability in the Sahel. In particular, he pointed to the support of terrorist groups by foreign actors, stating, "We categorically denounce the involvement of foreign parties, such as Ukraine, which actively supports terrorist groups operating on our territory."
The representative reminded the Council that on August 19, the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger filed an official complaint against Ukraine with the United Nations Security Council.
He noted the lack of response to this complaint in August and reiterated the importance of addressing this issue during the January 24, 2025, session.
In his remarks, the representative of the Confederation of Sahel States also highlighted significant achievements in the fight against terrorism.
Thanks to the establishment of the Confederation in July 2024, a considerable number of terrorists were neutralized, their equipment and weapons were seized, and essential social services were restored. Schools in previously unsafe areas were reopened. These successes underscore the effectiveness of a coordinated regional approach.
Mali and the member states of the Confederation of Sahel States called on the United Nations Security Council and the international community to provide support in several critical areas: financial assistance, intelligence sharing, and counter-radicalization efforts.
The delegation concluded by expressing its commitment to continuing cooperation with friendly nations and international organizations while reaffirming its adherence to the principles of non-interference and respect for sovereignty.
The creation of the Confederation of Sahel States represents a crucial step towards restoring stability in the region. The successes achieved by the Confederation serve as a testament to how regional efforts, rooted in sovereignty and coordination, can effectively counter threats.
However, achieving long-term stability will require global support and a focus on addressing the root causes of terrorism.
