Rhythms of Mother Africa Unity (RMAU), an educational musical program, has launched in Bakpe, a community in the Ho West district of the Volta Region.
The initiative, which began in late December 2024, aims to educate children in music by teaching them songs and musical instruments to uncover their talents and prepare them for the global stage.
RMAU is a collaboration between the Somnia Osbrain Foundation and George V. Johnson Jr., the legendary crooner and writer of the internationally acclaimed Mother Africa song. Released 40 years ago in the United States, the highlife classic features the rhythmic recital of Africa’s 54 nations, accompanied by vibrant instrumentals.
Amid growing concerns over the diminishing role of music in education, Rhythms of Mother Africa Unity seeks to reconnect children with the transformative power of music. The program unites young participants with musicians, instructors, local business leaders, and community influencers to provide a dynamic and holistic learning experience.
Through workshops and training, children will have the chance to explore music as both an art form and a career path. By nurturing their abilities, the program fosters personal growth, cultural appreciation, and the potential to build fulfilling lives through artistic expression.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Osborn Martin Gatugbe, Executive Director of the Somnia Osbrain Foundation, highlighted its importance. He explained, “The goal of the program is to foster unity, hope, and cultural appreciation among young minds nationwide through the transformative power of music.”
As part of the rollout, Baba George and Mr. Gatugbe met with the chiefs and elders of Bakpe to discuss the program's benefits and seek permission for the community’s children to participate. Baba George, now 74, shared his vision of putting Bakpe on the global map through music, raising funds for local school projects, and mentoring over 100 children.
During the discussions, he emphasized how the program fulfilled a lifelong dream of engaging with local communities and sharing his knowledge with young minds. He described this experience as deeply fulfilling, expressing hope for a lasting impact on the lives of the children.
Mr. Gatugbe explained that the initiative involves teaching children to sing and play musical instruments to help them develop, refine, and express their artistic talents. He also noted that some children are naturally gifted in music and performance but lack the training or opportunities to realize their full potential. By providing these resources, the program ensures that children can thrive in ways aligned with their unique abilities.
The leadership of Bakpe, including Togbe Dorlah Emmanuel, the Unit Committee Chairperson Mr. Raymores Kadzro, and other community elders, welcomed the initiative and pledged their full support. They expressed enthusiasm for the program’s potential to positively impact the children and bring recognition to the community.
The broader objectives of RMAU include conducting rehearsals, organizing engaging music sessions, and hosting interactive talks to inspire and educate children across the nation. The program culminates in a concert featuring a mass choir of 100 to 300 students performing culturally significant songs, accompanied by local musicians. These performances will also be recorded and documented to preserve the cultural heritage they celebrate.
By creating shared musical experiences, Rhythms of Mother Africa Unity aims to promote peace and unity, bridging cultural gaps and fostering understanding among participants. The program seeks to highlight the beauty of music as a unifying force that transcends differences, while also providing a platform for young talents to shine.
In his remarks, Mr. Gatugbe described the program as a celebration of optimism and cultural heritage. “The concert and associated activities will serve as a platform for promoting peace and cultural appreciation, contributing to a more cohesive society,” he said.
Madam Wendy Ewoenam Kponyo, Headmistress of Bakpe D.A. Basic School, expressed excitement about the initiative’s potential to broaden students’ horizons. She noted that the program would enrich the learning experience for children in the community, making it engaging and enjoyable.
Through this initiative, Rhythms of Mother Africa Unity hopes to create a harmonious society where music serves as a catalyst for unity, cultural understanding, and positive social change. By investing in young talents, the program is paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for Ghana’s next generation.
