Do not trust any word from Akufo-Addo and Bawumia

Feature Article Do not trust any word from Akufo-Addo and Bawumia
MON, 25 NOV 2024 2

During the 2016 general elections, the entire country was thrown into an unprecedented euphoria by the charismatic and compelling characters of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his then running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They captured the imaginations of the masses and won their confidence. Candidate Akufo-Addo went as far as begging Ghanaians to try him, and we regrettably did.

The two were convincing and the oratory skills of Akufo-Addo coupled with his rendition of “I am incorruptible”, “we have the men” and “I will not run a family and friends government”.

Ghanaians were convinced that Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia were the answer to their prayers. Ghanaians were reminded of his energetic fight against the introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) with his “Kume Preko” demonstration and how he loathes nuisance taxation that raises cost of living. During that time he granted an interview to the (AP) news agency where he said “The policies that the government (Rawlings NDC) are introducing, are policies that do not find favour with the general mass of our people and that the mass of our people have been systematically impoverished”.

This same man after ascending to the highest office of the land increased the same tax he was fighting against, he tried to introduce VAT on domestic electricity consumption.

It was the same Akufo-Addo who condemned Rawlings for introducing a tax he claimed was insensitive to the plight of the citizenry. Now, he has introduced a policy that taxed monies in the pockets of the masses i.e. E-Levy. During the introduction process, Ghanaians expressed their displeasure, but Akufo-Addo did not flinch. In opposition, Akufo-Addo accused former president Mahama for “yentie obiaa” (we will not listen to anyone) yet, he has refused to listen to anyone including the academics, Civil Service Organisations and all Ghanaians.

Akufo-Addo whiles in opposition mounted a platform and complained about the exchange rate which was $1 to GHC2, and promised to bring it down, today $1 is to GHC17, he complained about a ball of Kenkey which was selling at GHC1, today it is GHC.5, under the presidency of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia.

Candidate Akufo-Addo and his running mate accused the Mahama administration of excessive borrowing, and promised to cut down on borrowing when elected into office, because there is money in Ghana and we don’t need to borrow. At the time, the total National Debt Stock was GHC122billion, eight years down the line it has increased astronomically to GHC742billion under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia. It is shocking to know that, Ghana currently unable to service its external debt, under this administration.

The “old” Akufo-Addo accused former president Mills of an over bloated government, today, Akufo-Addo has given us the biggest government in the history of Ghana.

Akufo-Addo and Bawumia promised to move us from taxation to production, yet they have moved us from taxation to extortion.

Imagine the Akufo-Addo in opposition watching Akufo-Addo as a president on BBC saying that Ghanaian citizens are not taxed enough, emphasising that “people never like taxes, I don't know a group of people especially businesses when taxes are brought to them that like it”. How would candidate Akufo-Addo feel about president Akufo-Addo?

Akufo-Addo and his campaign team touted his credentials as a seasoned lawyer with an impeccable record in human right, yet it was under his watch that military men gunned down eight innocent souls during the 2020 general elections, it was under his watch that military men stormed Ashaiman in a broad daylight and subjected the residents to the most appalling inhumane treatment one can ever imagine, with the president saying nothing about both incidents. It was later alleged that, the Ashaiman brutality was sanctioned from the top.

Even though, absolute power corrupts absolutely, I don’t think Akufo-Addo changed because of power, but he only showed us the true him after getting power. He pretended to be different, incorruptible just to deceive us and he succeeded. Akufo-Addo is the greatest deception that has ever happened to this country.

If in the midst all these unprecedented economic hardships, human rights abuses, abuse of press freedoms, attacks on our chieftaincies, massive national debt stock, high level of inflation, high unemployment, rising cost of living and dwindling standards of living, the NPP still has the courage and temerity to tell us they deserve another term, it only means one thing, they have no respect for Ghanaians. SIMPLICITAS:

Ironically, today, the same Akufo-Addo is telling Ghanaians to give Bawumia a chance, this is nothing but an edited version of his “try me too” which he used in deceiving us in 2016, we must not trust any word from Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, they are mere deceptions and lies.

Folks, the fact that the NPP is convinced of “breaking the 8” after this abysmal performance, when ex-President John Agyekum Kufour who in my view performed much better than this Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government couldn’t do so indicates that, the NPP does not respect Ghanaians. Let me add that, ex-President John Agyekum Kufour is one of the most corrupt and clueless Presidents in this country, (that is another topic for another day).

As President Akufo-Addo’s tenure is due to end in few months he is trying hard to impose his Vice with whom they brought this country to its knees on Ghanaians in order to insulate him (President Akufo-Addo) and his accomplices from any accountability for the massive plunder of the state resources and also give them the opportunity to complete the Agyapadie agenda. Once bitten twice shy, a word to the wise is enough.

If we allow him to deceive us to give him another term through Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (perish the thought), it will be the cherry on the icing on the cake for Akufo-Addo in his craft of deceit.
