Ghana's democracy faces a silent threat that is seldom talked about - one that undermines the very fabric of our nation's ability to make informed decisions. The concentration of media ownership in the hands of a powerful few has given rise to sycophantic media professionals who prioritise their paymasters' interests over the national good. This alarming trend necessitates urgent attention and legislative action.
The Despite Group, a prominent media conglomerate, exemplifies this issue. With its extensive reach across radio and online platforms, including Peace FM, Neat FM, Hello FM, and UTV, it wields significant influence over public opinion ¹. Similarly, Media General, another major player, boasts a diverse portfolio including TV3, 3FM, Onua FM, Connect FM, and Akoma FM ². While these entities are not inherently problematic, their dominance in the media landscape raises concerns about the lack of diverse perspectives and the potential for biased reporting.
To safeguard Ghana's democracy, it is crucial that Parliament passes legislation banning multiple cross-media ownership. This would prevent any single entity from controlling too large a share of the media market. Furthermore, breaking up existing media empires would foster a more competitive and diverse media environment.
Key Reforms Needed:
- Ban on Multiple Cross-Media Ownership: Prohibit individuals or companies from owning multiple media outlets across different platforms.
- Media Diversity Laws: Encourage diversity in media ownership to prevent the concentration of power.
- Public Interest Provision: Ensure that media outlets prioritize public interest over private or commercial interests.
By implementing these reforms, Ghana can protect its democracy and ensure that the media serves the people, not just the interests of the powerful. It is time for Parliament to act and safeguard the future of our nation.
