Election 2024: Bernard Mornah sues EC over disqualification from presidential race

The flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, has filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) following his disqualification from the upcoming December 2024 presidential election.

Mornah was one of 11 presidential aspirants disqualified by the EC. According to the commission, these candidates were disqualified for failing to correct errors on their nomination forms.

Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson, explained the reasons for Mornah's disqualification, stating, "Mr. Bernard Mornah had incomplete details of supporters. He also used registered voters from one district to support his nomination in other districts. Additionally, his form contained varying signatures for the same supporters, and in some cases, the same signature appeared for different supporters. Based on these irregularities, the committee recommended his disqualification."

In response, Mornah argues that his disqualification was a violation of his rights and did not follow due process as required by law. He contends that the decision was illegal and is seeking legal redress.

Mornah is requesting the court to issue an "order of mandamus compelling the second respondent (the EC) to declare the first applicant (Mornah) as duly nominated to contest the 2024 presidential elections."

He is also seeking an order to prevent the EC from printing presidential ballot papers or proceeding with the December 7, 2024, election until he is declared a duly nominated candidate and allowed to participate in the election.
