The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has annulled the parliamentary primaries conducted in May 2023 for the Amenfi Central constituency in the Western Region and set September 8 for a rerun.
In a press release issued on September 4, the party's Functional Executive Committee said it took the decision at a meeting on September 3 to annul the initial primaries that were subjected to litigation at the Sekondi High Court.
"This election has been the subject of litigation at the High Court, Sekondi. In the reliefs (c), (d) and (e) of the Plaintiffs’ action, they seek from the court, the annulment of the parliamentary primary election result and an order for rerun of the election," a portion of the statement read.
The party said accordingly, it had decided to annul the May 2023 election and conduct a fresh one.
It has also opened nominations for aspirants ahead of the September 8 rerun.
The timetable issued indicates nominations will be opened on September 6 and close on September 7 morning.
Vetting and appeals will also be done on September 7 with elections slated for September 8.
"Nomination forms can be picked from the office of the Deputy General Secretary in charge of Administration and Finance," the statement noted.
The decision comes months after the Sekondi High Court barred the initial winner, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, from campaigning as the candidate due to a case challenging her victory.
The plaintiffs had alleged she used "fake and unqualified documents" to contest the primary that saw her defeat incumbent Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah.
