The Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Isaac Bampoe-Addo, has suggested that a union government system may be a better alternative for Ghana compared to the current democratic system.
In an address to Trade Union Congress’ 12th Quadrennial Delegates Conference held in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region, Mr. Bampoe-Addo assessed some of the challenges facing Ghana's democracy.
He called for consideration of introducing partnership in the governance structure through a union government model.
"In assessing the benefits or otherwise of our current democratic dispensation, account should be taken of the following, namely, the voluntary spirit that is waning, patriotism and selflessness as against ethnocentrism, national cohesion vis a vis ethnocentric governance,” he stated as quoted by 3news.com.
Mr. Bampoe-Addo further noted "Corruption in all forms and indiscipline that has destroyed the fabric of our society, is it not time to consider introducing partnership in the structure of governance in Ghana? Is union government not a better alternative? Let us all begin to ponder over this."
A union government is a form of government where power is shared between a central national government and several constituent regional governments.
It aims to foster greater involvement, representation and collaboration between different aspects of society in decision-making and governance.
