Joshua Anoumou Agbenu, a Public Relations Communications Strategist and an NDC member has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to consider someone from the Volta region as his running mate for the 2024 elections.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, April 1, Agbenu explained that selecting a Voltarian as Mahama’s running mate will appeal to the Volta caucus which has supported the NDC over the years.

He argued that although the NDC chose Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang from the Central region in 2020, the region did not reciprocate the gesture.

Agbenu noted that the running mate position is meant to complement the presidential candidate’s strengths.

He noted that if the expected goals are not met, the choice should be revised.

He asserted that Leslie Mensah Tamakloe, who is from the Volta region and has contributed to digital development, will be a better choice than Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman.

“Clearly a son of the Volta soil who has heavily contributed to digital development across several industries, it is essential for the NDC and most importantly, the ‘already crowned’ flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, to consider returning to the backbone of the congress to assess this selection after the presidential primaries in May 2023,” Agbenu wrote.

The NDC communicator noted that the party has paid attention to the Central region since ex-President Jerry Rawlings era but it is time to return to the Volta region.

Agbenu’s call comes at a time when the NDC is seeking to rebuild confidence in the party following its defeat in the 2020 elections.

Selecting a running mate who appeals to the key constituencies that have supported the party over the years could boost the NDC’s chances in 2024.

He believes that choosing Leslie Mensah Tamakloe from the Volta region will guarantee the NDC’s traditional stronghold and ensure victory in 2024.

“Inasmuch as this culture of revising the selection of running mates in the NDC has partially been on the grounds of some unfortunate circumstances, it is important for the NDC, at a time when the party is being considered as a better option for 2024, to consciously prove to Ghanaians that every single detail related to the 2024 campaign, even to the selection of a running mate, expressly meets their needs and wants,” Agbenu stated.
