66th Ordinary Session of the African Count begins in Arusha

The 66th Ordinary Session of the African Count on Human and People’s Rights has started to examine a number of applications between Monday, August 29th and Thursday, September 22nd when it is expected to give judgment and close the session on September 23rd, 2022.

The African Court’s Contentious Jurisdiction applies to all cases and disputes submitted to it in respect of the interpretation and application of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, (the Charter), the Protocol, and any other relevant human rights instrument ratified by the States concerned.

For its Advisory Jurisdiction, the Court may, at the request of a Member State of the African Union (AU), the AU, any of its organs, or any African organization recognized by the AU, give an opinion on any other legal matter relating to the Charter or any other relevant human rights instruments, provided that the subject matter of the opinion is not related to a matter being examined by the Commission.

Meanwhile, Judge Professor Dennis Dominic Adjei, of Ghana, has officially been sworn in as a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights at Arusha, Tanzania.

The swearing-in of Justice Adjei forms part of the activities to officially open the 66^th Ordinary Session of the African Continental Court a statement signed by Dr. Robert Eno the African Court Registrar and copied to the Communication for Development and Advocacy Consult in Tema on Monday stated.

Justice Adjei was elected for a term of six years at the 41^st Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union held in Lusaka, Zambia last month, where Justice Ntyam Ondo Mengue from Cameroon was re-elected for a second and final term of six years.

African Court is composed of eleven judges and headed by Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud, President; and Justice Blaise Tchikaya, Vice President.

Other members are: Justice Ben Kioko; Justice Rafaâ Ben Achour; Justice Mukamulisa Marie Thérèse; Lady Justice Tujilane Rose Chizumila; Lady Justice Bensaoula Chafika; Lady Justice Stella Isibhakhomen Anukam; Justice Dumisa Ntsebeza; and Justice Sacko Modibo.
