I’m not behind Ernest Kumi’s defeat in Akwatia

The outgoing Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia constituency in the Eastern Region, Mercy Adu Gyamfi aka Ama Sey has denied claims she masterminded the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in the 2020 polls.

This comes after executives in the Constituency called for her suspension over claims she campaigned against the party’s parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who lost to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Henry Boakye Yiadom.

But in an interview with Citi News, Ama Sey described the accusation as unfortunate. She has thus challenged her accusers to present proof if any, to back their claims.

“I just heard that our chairman, Baba Yakubu is spreading rumours that I was involved in vote-buying and trying to turn supporters against Ernest Kumi. I challenge anyone who has received any freebies from me since the electioneering season commenced to come out and expose me. I have not given anybody any money. I openly campaigned for the party in this constituency.”

“I would wish to demand the resignation of the constituency chairman. He has no moral right to suspend me from the party. Some of us will not look on while others try to destroy what we have collectively built as a party. I am sad about the turn of events and I feel my work has been a vein,” she added.

Ama Sey, the incumbent MP, lost the NPP primaries on June 20, 2020, to Mr. Kumi by only four votes.

She demanded a recount of the ballots because she claimed four deceased persons had their names in the electoral album and were declared to have voted.

Responding to these claims, however, Ernest Kumi said the concerns raised by his contender lacked merit for any proper action to be taken.

“There is no basis for all the things they are saying out there. Even when you want to petition the party, it must be grounded under the law and certain facts. But as I speak, there is no fact in there. They are not making any case so how do you say that all that you want is for the ballots to be recounted. Because if there is a basis for what they are saying, we will stand on those bases for the recounting but as it stands now, there is nothing like that,” he stated.

Ama Sey became popular during the 2016 elections after she unseated the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal.
