Gospel musician Great Ampong has criticised some Ghanaian pastors for allegedly prioritising money and personal interests over their core responsibility of winning souls for Christ.
According to the musician, some religious leaders have become indifferent to the challenges facing other people, provided they and their immediate circles are not directly affected.
He believes this attitude has contributed to the growing social vices in the country and weakened the church’s influence on society.
In his assessment, about 80 per cent of Ghanaian pastors are aware that their conduct and approach to ministry have disappointed God.
“Ghanaian pastors are nonchalant and uncaring. So far as the doom is not befalling them, they have no interest in other people’s predicaments,” he said, questioning whether the attitude was rooted in cultural practices or individual behaviour.
Ampong further argued that the declining relevance of church attendance among some people reflects a broader failure of the church to influence lives positively.
He observed that some adults now prefer spending their Sundays in betting centres and other environments associated with social vices rather than attending church services.
“Adults would rather waste their Sundays in betting rooms and other settings committing vices than be in church. We have lost the anointing and essence of ministry. Money making is more than winning souls,” he stated.
The gospel musician’s comments highlight concerns about the role of religious leadership in addressing social challenges and restoring public confidence in Christianity.
He maintained that pastors must return to the fundamental purpose of ministry by prioritising spiritual growth, compassion and the salvation of souls over financial gains and personal interests.
