Joining NDC did me more harm than good – Mzbel

Ghanaian musician Mzbel has said her involvement with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has caused her more harm than good.

The musician said she no longer wants to be associated with any political party after openly supporting the NDC and using her platform to promote the party.

Speaking on the Kafui Dey Interview podcast, Mzbel said her decision to publicly identify with the NDC affected her relationship with some fans and resulted in the loss of business opportunities.

“I don't want to have anything to do with any political party anymore. It has caused me more harm than good,” she said.

According to Mzbel, she had a significant following among supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before she publicly declared her support for the NDC.

She said she subsequently lost some of those followers and was allegedly excluded from events organised by people associated with the NPP.

Mzbel also claimed that some events she had been booked for were cancelled after organisers became aware of her political affiliation.

She said the backlash extended to social media, where she claimed to have faced verbal and physical threats from some people within the NDC.

The musician explained that her support for the NDC was largely influenced by her upbringing in Jamestown, where she said the party and its founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, were deeply rooted in the community.

She said her political involvement grew after she realised that statements she made during election campaigns often gained significant attention online.

However, Mzbel said she has no intention of pursuing active politics and does not consider herself knowledgeable enough about the field to enter it professionally.

“I’m not against any political party, but I don’t belong to any political party,” she said.
