“I loved NDC but I’ve been disappointed and I’ve learned my lesson” — Mzbel

Ghanaian musician and media personality Mzbel has spoken candidly about her experience with partisan politics, saying her public support for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) came at a high cost to her career.

Speaking in an interview with journalist Kafui Dey, Mzbel said she was once politically neutral and deliberately avoided openly showing her support for any political party, a situation she believes allowed her to enjoy more professional opportunities.

According to the musician, her decision to publicly identify with and support the NDC affected some of the events she was booked to perform at.

Mzbel recalled an instance where she was reportedly removed from a booked event just days before the programme because, according to what she was told, the organisers' special guest was a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She said similar experiences affected some of her opportunities outside Ghana, while she also believed that her political affiliation contributed to her losing almost half of her fan base.

The musician said the experience became particularly painful because she had supported the NDC out of genuine belief and commitment, but later felt sidelined by the same political grouping she had openly backed..

In her latest conversation with Kafui Dey, Mzbel reflected on the broader impact of partisan identification on her career and personal relationships with fans and industry stakeholders.

She said the experience has taught her an important lesson and suggested that she would approach political affiliation differently going forward.
