NDC MP explains why Kevin Taylor was not arrested when he returned to Ghana

Member of Parliament for Akwatia Bernard Bediako Baidoo has explained why Kevin Taylor was not arrested when he returned to Ghana, pointing to legal proceedings that had been filed at the Supreme Court.

Speaking on Newsfile during a discussion on the Ghana Jollof case, Baidoo said a bench warrant had been issued against Taylor but was later challenged at the Supreme Court.

“There was an issuance of a bench warrant, which bench warrant has now been determined by the Supreme Court of the Republic not to be proper,” he said.

Baidoo said processes were filed at the Supreme Court on July 2, 2025, while Taylor returned to Ghana around July 24 or 25.

“At the time, the matter was seized with the Supreme Court to determine whether the bench warrant was proper or not,” he said.

He therefore questioned whether Taylor should have been arrested while the Supreme Court was considering the matter.

“I didn’t want to go into Kelvin’s matter. But you see, were you expecting that in the interim, between the time he filed processes in the Supreme Court and when he arrived in the country, he should have been arrested?” Baidoo asked.

To support his argument, Baidoo referred to a separate Supreme Court case involving an individual whose arrest, according to him, could not proceed while the court was seized with the matter.

He said the principle was that once a matter had been taken before the Supreme Court, the parties had to respect the court process.

“The gentleman also has rights, regardless. You may have your prejudice. He has rights,” Baidoo told host Samson Lardy who vehemently opposed his position.

Samson then challenged the explanation by pointing to the government’s handling of other commentators.

Samson asked why the government had been able to identify the IP addresses of other people and arrest them but had not done the same with Taylor.

“Bernard, between the time you came into office and today, that you have identified every commentator, their IP address and gone to arrest them. You don’t know Kelvin’s IP address?” Samson asked.

Baidoo maintained that the Taylor case had a separate legal history and insisted that he was not defending anything Taylor may have said.

“I am not defending anything he may have said,” he said.
