Renowned Ghanaian music producer Zapp Mallet has weighed in on the ongoing conversation about veteran musicians seeking financial support, stating that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Speaking during an interview on Max TV Ghana, Zapp Mallet stressed that the act of asking for help is not unique to the music industry, but a reality across all sectors of society.
According to him, many people working in corporate offices and other professions also face financial difficulties and require support, but their situations often go unnoticed because they are not public figures.
“Begging or asking for help is not only in the music industry; it happens in every sector of work. People in offices also need help, but we don’t hear about them,” he explained.
The veteran producer further highlighted the difference between Ghana and other parts of the world, particularly Europe, where many legendary musicians are better supported due to well-established systems and structures within the creative industry.
He noted that while some Ghanaian music legends are seen publicly appealing for assistance, their counterparts abroad are often able to survive through royalties, pensions, and institutional backing.
However, Zapp Mallet was quick to point out that even in more developed systems, not all is perfect. He revealed that there have been instances where some musicians abroad still face hardship and, in some cases, pass away with little or no money despite the existence of such structures.
