True to the expectation of patrons who trooped to the Accra International Conference Centre over the weekend, highlife legend and King of Burger Highlife George Darko gave a very good reason why it was worth investing in the “Save a Heart” charity concert.
Coming on as the second act on the night, good old George gave an inch-perfect presentation of the mettle he is made of, as he got the audience to dance all throughout his performance.
George joined other Ghanaian artistes to raise funds for children suffering from dire heart diseases and complications.
The event, also afforded George a unique opportunity to give a fair-to-good delivery of songs from his latest LP, “Lucky Star”.
George's A&R Manager Gilbert Boakye Nhyira said his artiste's performance on the night, was just a tip of a bigger installment in-store for his fans later this month when he performs at the Coconut Groove Regency Hotel on the 11th of February and on the 12th of February in Kumasi courtesy Nhyira FM.
This year, courtesy Mirror Image Promotions, there will be a worldwide release of his latest album and a grand concert to mark his 60th birthday.
Born 1951 in Akropong, in the Eastern Region, George Darko is credited for introducing the Burger-highlife in the 1980s with his first hit "Ako ti brofo".
He was educated at the Presbyterian School at Akropong. After playing for an army band in the Middle East, Darko returned to Ghana and formed the Golden Stool Band. In the late 1970s the band moved to Germany, where he went solo and formed the Bus Stop band in 1982.
He returned to Akropong in 1988, where he was made Tufuhene of Akropong-Akuapim in 1991 with the stool name, Nana Yaw Ampem Darko and has since been, combining his musical career with chieftaincy.
